Politani Samarinda and RRI Highlight the Importance of Soil Analysis for Sustainable Agriculture
SAMARINDA 05/30/2025 – Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic (Politani) in collaboration with RRI Samarinda in the Mozaik Indonesia Program, presents a public dialogue entitled "Soil Analysis: The Foundation for Sustainable Food Self-Sufficiency." This dialogue presents the main speaker Haryatie Sarie, S.P., M.P., a lecturer in the Food Crop Production Technology Study Program, Department of Agriculture, who raised crucial issues around soil health as the foundation for successful agriculture.

In her presentation, Haryatie emphasized that soil analysis is no longer an option, but rather a basic need in realizing agriculture that is not only productive, but also safe and sustainable. "Don't just focus on abundant harvests, but also pay attention to the content of heavy metals that are harmful to health," she said. She explained that much land in East Kalimantan is acidic and contains heavy metals, especially in ex-mining land. This condition requires detoxification efforts and careful soil management before it is used for cultivating food crops.

As part of her academic commitment and community service, Haryatie conducted a direct survey of the former coal mining area that has now been transformed into a productive green area. Through a partnership between farmers and the company, the land is utilized with an agroforestry system under tall trees, where farmers plant various vegetable commodities.

During the field visit, she designed soil sampling points that would then be analyzed in the laboratory. The goal is to evaluate soil fertility and determine the extent to which the land is able to support environmentally friendly agriculture.

"With a background in soil chemistry, I want to ensure that previously damaged land can be restored and return to functioning ecologically," she explained. More than just about nutrients and pH, for her, soil is a symbol of hope - that former mines can be a source of food, a source of life, and part of a sustainable future solution.

Haryatie also encourages farmers to conduct regular soil tests, either through simple methods such as pH tests using litmus paper, or by consulting educational institutions such as Politani Samarinda. She emphasized that soil analysis does not require a lot of money, but it is very important in determining the efficiency of fertilization and the success of a sustainable agricultural system.

This activity reflects the active role of Politani Samarinda in supporting the transformation of post-mining land into productive land, while strengthening collaboration between academics, media, and the community in realizing food security based on science and environmental sustainability. (HUMAS)
