The Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic was originally called the Agricultural Polytechnic of Mulawarman University for Forestry Studies. It was officially established on February 6, 1989 by the Governor of the First Level Region of East Kalimantan, Bpk. Suwandi together with the Chancellor of Mulawarman University Bpk. Yunus Rashid. Then continued with the inauguration of the Agricultural Polytechnic Campus of Mulawarman University by the Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture, Bpk. Fuad Hasan on September 19, 1991.

The purpose of the establishment of this Agricultural Polytechnic is to meet the needs of workers with special skills and are ready to use, have high morale and discipline, are orderly and productive, and are able to realize the application of science and technology into a tangible form that is very useful in development.

In order to achieve independence, the State Agricultural Polytechnic of Samarinda as Poliagro is a new name used to replace the previous name, namely Agricultural Polytechnic of Mulawarman University (Politani Unmul). The name change is carried out as a condition of independence which is legalized by a decree. MENPEN No. B-703/I/1995 dated June 30, 1995. At the time of the establishment of the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic, it only had 2 Departments / Associate Expert Study Programs, namely the Department / Study Program of Forest Management and the Department / Study Program of Forest Products Processing with education level Diploma III Program (D-III) for three years or six semesters.

To anticipate the era of globalization and the demands of society where it is estimated that the plantation sector will become the prima donna, starting from the 2000/2001 academic year the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic was opened the Plantation Crop Cultivation Study Program (BTP) which is under the Department of Forest Management and in 2004/2005 the Program was opened. Study of Plantation Product Processing Technology (TPHP) which is under the Department of Forest Product Processing.

In the 2009/2010 academic year, the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic opened 2 new study programs under the Department of Forest Management, namely the Geoinformatics Study Program and the Environmental Management Study Program, as a development of existing programs and community demands as well as in order to meet the demands of continuous development. develop and need to be accompanied by efforts to manage the environment by adequate human resources in their fields so that development can be carried out in a sustainable manner.

In 2010, there was a name change in 2 existing departments, namely the Forest Management Department changed to the Agricultural Management Department and the Forest Processing Department changed to the Agricultural Technology Department. With the increasing development of technology and to meet the needs of an increasingly skilled workforce, in the 2014/2015 academic year, the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic opened 2 new Study Programs of Applied Science Bachelor Programs, namely the Plantation Management Study Program changed its name to the Plantation Management Study Program and the Informatics Management Study Program which later changed its name to Software Engineering Technology with a Diploma IV Program (Applied Bachelor). Overall, from its establishment in 1989 to 2015, the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic has held Applied Bachelor and Associate Degree Programs with 3 Departments and 14 Study Programs and is now better known as POLITANI SAMARINDA
