Professional Orientation of the Plantation Management Study Program at Samarinda Polytechnic to Yogyakarta
As part of its Professional Orientation program, the Plantation Management Study Program at the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic (Politani) conducted a field study visit to the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. The multi-day event was enthusiastically attended by students, accompanied by their supervisors. The main agenda of the visit included hands-on learning about cocoa post-harvest practices at ecotourism destinations and comparative studies at partner universities.

The first visit took the group to the Nganggeleran Tourism Village Garden, an ecotourism destination renowned for its integrated and sustainable cocoa plantation management. Here, students not only observed the cultivation process firsthand but also focused on deepening post-harvest cocoa techniques, including fruit sorting, fermentation, drying, and primary processing to produce high-quality cocoa beans. This hands-on experience provided real-world experience that complemented the theory learned in the classroom. Beyond the technical aspects, students also learned about the agrotourism concept implemented in Nganggeleran. The integration of productive plantations with tourism creates an attractive and sustainable business model, offering new insights into business diversification in the plantation sector.

The next agenda item was a comparative study visit to the Yogyakarta Agricultural Institute. The group was warmly welcomed by the leadership and academic community. This activity aimed to exchange information on the curriculum, learning methods, supporting facilities for practical work, and opportunities for collaboration between the two institutions. The discussion was productive, covering current issues in plantation management, agricultural technology innovation, and strategies for addressing industry challenges. Politani Samarinda students also had the opportunity to tour campus facilities, such as laboratories and other facilities.

This Professional Orientation activity is expected to be a concrete step in preparing graduates of the Politani Samarinda Plantation Management Study Program who not only master theory but also possess practical experience, understand industry trends, and have a broad network.
