30 Laboratory Personnel from Politani Samarinda Conduct Benchmarking Visit to the Integrated Laboratory at ITK Balikpapan
Balikpapan, July 14, 2026 – In an effort to enhance human resource competence and the quality of laboratory management, 30 Educational Laboratory Technicians (PLP) from the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic (Politani Samarinda) conducted a benchmarking visit to the Integrated Laboratory of the Kalimantan Institute of Technology (ITK) in Balikpapan on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The activity took place from 08:30 WITA (Central Indonesian Time) until its scheduled conclusion.

This benchmarking activity is part of Politani Samarinda’s commitment to boosting the capacity of its laboratory technicians through direct observation of laboratory governance that employs a sound, modern, and quality-based management system. Beyond strengthening institutional ties, the visit served as a platform for sharing experiences, innovations, and best practices in educational laboratory management.

The Politani Samarinda delegation was warmly welcomed by the management team of the ITK Integrated Laboratory. The event opened with remarks from representatives of both institutions, emphasizing the importance of inter-institutional collaboration in improving the quality of laboratory services—a key pillar supporting education, research, and community service activities.

Subsequently, participants received a presentation covering the profile of the ITK Integrated Laboratory, its organizational structure, facility and infrastructure governance, administrative management, the implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) protocols, equipment maintenance, and strategies for enhancing service quality for the academic community.

Following the discussion session, participants toured various laboratory facilities to observe firsthand the implementation of the laboratory management system. During this tour, they discussed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), equipment loan systems, inventory management, laboratory scheduling, and the use of information technology to support laboratory services.

The benchmarking activity was highly interactive; participants actively asked questions and shared experiences regarding the challenges faced in managing laboratories at their respective institutions. The open atmosphere of the discussion was intended to generate ideas and innovations that could be implemented at the Politani Samarinda Laboratory.

Through this activity, it is hoped that all Laboratory Personnel (PLP) will gain new insights and identify best practices adaptable to the development of the laboratory management system at the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic (Politani Samarinda). This benchmarking exercise represents a concrete step toward enhancing laboratory services—making them professional, effective, and efficient—while supporting the overall improvement of higher education quality. These objectives align with the purpose of the benchmarking visit as outlined in Politani Samarinda’s official request letter to ITK.

At the conclusion of the event, both institutions expressed hope that their established partnership would be further strengthened through future collaborative programs—spanning laboratory development, competency enhancement for laboratory personnel, and other academic activities. This benchmarking activity is expected to mark the beginning of a sustainable synergy aimed at creating higher education laboratories that are excellent, innovative, and competitive.
