SAMARINDA - (08/12/2025) Fifth-semester students in the Plantation Management Study Program from the Samarinda Agricultural Polytechnic conducted a field internship on a community-owned oil palm plantation (owned by Mr. Yusuf and Mrs. Hj. Erni) in the Muara Kaman area of Sei Pinang (SP) 5. This intensive four-day activity, from December 8-12, 2025, aimed to provide hands-on experience in sustainable oil palm plantation management. This field internship is an integral part of the curriculum, emphasizing learning by doing. Students not only learn theory in the classroom but also directly apply their knowledge in the field. Over the four days, the students were guided by field supervisors and the plantation owners. They engaged in various technical activities in oil palm plantation management, from identifying plant characteristics, identifying pests and diseases, assessing soil fertility, applying appropriate fertilization techniques, to observing growth phases and harvesting. The internship also covered aspects of plantation planning and small-scale labor management. The community-owned oil palm plantation in SP 5, Muara Kaman, was chosen because it represents the conditions of smallholder plantations commonly found in East Kalimantan. This provides students with real-world insights into the opportunities and challenges of managing community-scale plantations. This Field Practice activity is expected to strengthen the link between vocational education and the real needs of the plantation sector, particularly in supporting more productive and sustainable smallholder oil palm plantations in East Kalimantan Province.
